The theme this year is “Riding the Wave of Innovation: Advances in Pediatric Oncology Social Work.” The collective knowledge in the field of pediatric oncology social work spans a huge range on the spectrum of care for the children and families with whom we interact. From diagnosis to end of life care, as well as the growing field of survivorship and late effects, pediatric oncology social workers collaborate with the entire multidisciplinary team to effectively meet the complex needs of the child and family. Our theme this year surrounds innovation – emphasizing changes in how we think and process – ideas that transform with the goal of positive change. So exploring new ideas, interventions, and programs that make a positive impact on both clinical care and collaborative research advances pediatric oncology social work.
Objectives:
- To create linkages and support between individuals, groups and organizations addressing the needs of those affected by childhood cancer.
- To enhance knowledge and understanding of cultural, spiritual, social and lifestyle diversity: applying social work interventions/techniques to improve communication and relationships toward quality care.
- To integrate and promote the use of psychosocial oncology research within daily social work practice.
- Participants will learn the language of research and its ability to improve our direct care of children and families.
- To further develop our understanding of loss, the trauma of multiple losses and our ability to intervene with children diagnosed with cancer and their families toward compassionate end of life care, healing and future positive growth.
- To advance clinical skills and empirical knowledge about the impact of cancer on children through young adulthood in pediatric oncology.
- To broaden knowledge and develop strategies to address the needs of children and families surviving their childhood cancer experience.
- To learn and incorporate innovative policies, program development, supervision, mentoring opportunities that enhance quality psychosocial care.
